One large unbleached cotton coffee filter for brewing more than one cup at a time. It is a cloth sock sewn onto a 3.5-inch wire ring with a handle, the same bolsita Costa Rican households hang in a wooden chorreador stand. The sock is 6 inches long.
Will It Fit My Brewer?
It fits our Costa Rican chorreador and any stand that holds a filter by a 3.5-inch wire ring. Measure your stand's opening before you order.
This is a hanging cloth sock, not a shaped cone liner, so it is not a drop-in replacement for paper filters in a cone dripper or an automatic drip machine.
Need More Than One?
The same large filter comes in a pack of three. For one or two cups, the standard filters use the same 3.5-inch ring with a 5-inch sock.
How to Brew With It
Use a medium-coarse grind. For each cup, start with about 20 g of coffee to 240–300 g of water at 90–96 °C. Pre-wet the cloth, pour enough water to wet all the grounds and let them bloom for 30 seconds, then pour the rest slowly. A grind that is too fine slows the flow and can clog the cloth.
What Cotton Does to the Cup
Cotton lets more of the coffee's natural oils through than paper does while still holding back the grounds, so the cup has a fuller, rounder body and no paper taste.
Care
Rinse the filter in hot water after every brew and let it dry. Now and then, simmer it in a pot of plain water to lift built-up oils. Never use soap: cotton absorbs it and your coffee will taste of it. Replace the filter when the coffee starts tasting off or the cloth stays heavily stained.
